Nine Dead in Rwanda Lightning Strike

(MENAFN) A lightning bolt struck a group of 15 individuals in Rwanda's eastern region Sunday evening, claiming nine lives and leaving six others wounded, local news outlets reported.

The tragedy unfolded in the Jarama Sector of Ngoma District within Rwanda's Eastern Province as the victims sought refuge from rainfall following agricultural labor.

The casualties were farm workers who had taken cover after completing fieldwork, Eastern Province Governor Prudence Rubingisa told broadcasting agency, confirming that survivors received immediate transport to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Specialists point out that electrical storms frequently impact sections of eastern and western Rwanda owing to the nation's geographical features and landscape characteristics.

Official safety protocols for lightning protection recommend promptly moving to indoor locations, avoiding trees as shelter points, not using mobile devices during electrical storms, disconnecting household electronics, and implementing lightning rod systems.
