Andrey Maslov Addresses Outlook for Peace in Eastern DR Congo
His assessment comes in the aftermath of a prominent gathering in Washington, where, on Thursday, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan leader Paul Kagame endorsed a peace accord brokered with the assistance of US President Donald Trump.
In a conversation with a news agency, Maslov highlighted that the function of the mediator continues to be pivotal, underscoring that Washington seeks to maintain and “selectively strengthen its influence in Africa, shifting towards a more ‘economical’ and pragmatic format of long-term deals.”
He noted that “ironically, their conflict (DR Congo and Rwanda – RT) provides the US with more opportunities to maintain leverage and negotiate the development of specific natural resources within the context of peace deals,” implying that ongoing tensions can inadvertently enhance US bargaining power.
Maslov further argued that the peace initiative serves as a diplomatic façade for underlying economic dialogues.
“By involving DR Congo and Rwanda in the negotiation process he moderated, Trump and his team gained an exclusive opportunity to discuss roadmaps for economic cooperation with each country separately,” he stated, suggesting that the mediation process opens doors to distinct bilateral economic arrangements.
